Man City’s Riyad Mahrez to move to Saudi Arabia

Riyad Mahrez is set to join the growing list of star players moving to Saudi Arabia this summer. According to David Ornstein, Mahrez is set to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli. The club has paid a £30 million ($38.7 million) transfer fee to secure the Algerian international‘s services from Manchester City. He will sign a three-year contract with a conditional fourth year.

Mahrez has been with City since 2018 when he joined the club from Leicester City. Since then, he has made over 200 appearances for the club and has won the Premier League four times. His silky smooth dribbling and his ability to provide goals and assists have been massive assets for Pep Guardiola’s attack. However, despite having two years left remaining on his contract, it now looks like the 32-year-old winger’s time with City has come to an end.

Mahrez was reportedly furious to have been left out of the starting lineups for City’s FA Cup and Champions League finals matchups. The exclusions were apparently the last straw for Mahrez. He then informed Guardiola of his desire to leave the club this summer in order to move to Saudi Arabia.

Mahrez’s departure will be City’s second big departure this summer. The club has already lost its former captain İlkay Gündoğan to Barcelona.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Pro League continues to attract high-level players to make the move to Saudi Arabia. Cristiano Ronaldo‘s move to Al-Nassr last January opened the floodgates, and now multiple elite players have made moves to Saudi Pro League clubs.

It is going to be interesting to see who else joins Riyad Mahrez on this rapidly growing list of players who are making the move to Saudi Arabia this summer in the coming weeks.
