After a promising rookie season, I ended up drafting Dante Pettis in fantasy prior to the start of the 2019 season. Calling Pettis’ 2019 season a disappointment would be an understatement. With the Washington product heading into his 3rd NFL season, now feels like a make or break campaign. Will Petts find his groove and make an impact or is he weeks away from being released?
After the 49ers lost Emmanuel Sanders in free agency, I thought maybe that signaled they had faith Pettis could turn the corner. Then the 2020 NFL Draft came and they traded away multiple picks to move up to select Arizona State wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. They even drafted Jauan Jennings in the 7th round too. That leaves Deebo Samuel, Kendrick Bourne, Jalen Hurd, Ritchie James, and Trent Taylor on the roster as well.
Pettis, 24, feels like the odd man out. I don’t get what happened. Pettis had such a promising rookie season. The former 2nd round pick in 2018 averaged 17.3 yards per reception and scored 5 touchdowns. Then he fell apart. Kyle Shanahan talked smack on him and Pettis finished the 2019 season with 109 yards.
So what does 2020 hold? Marquise Goodwin already got moved. Pettis is young enough that San Fran can recoup a draft pick by moving on. It may be too soon to totally give up on Pettis. That 3rd year seems to be a breaking point for a lot of players. That time is now for Dante Pettis. Maybe he cares more about his hair than he does about football? Time to prove it’s not the case.
