Magic Preparing Massive Free Agent Offer For Grant Williams?
Given the lack of time to prepare for the new NBA CBA rules, teams that have massive payrolls could be in trouble in terms of keeping some of their depth talent. Grant Williams is a perfect example of this and all it takes is one team to make him an offer the Celtics can’t match. One theory out there suggests the Orlando Magic could be the team for Grant Williams.
The Heavy’s Sean Deveney reported the Magic could become players for Williams’ services.
“He is 24, he has proven his chops, on both ends,” a Western Conference executive told Deveney. “You can’t coach that kind of experience. He’s got it. He is a perfect fit there. You want to become a playoff team, he is the kind of guy they’d want. But Orlando would have to overpay to get him and it is tough to expect a team to do that. Obviously, if you are Williams, you want to see the Magic being aggressive on the market.”
Williams, 24, wanted a deal that would pay him $20 million per year annually. That number may seem a little rich but I do believe the Celtics are better off paying him whatever the number ends up being. Williams brings grit that the Celtics team needs. Williams is also an under rated shooter posting clips of 45.4% from the field and 39.5% from 3-point range. You can certainly do worse than that as a spot up shooter.
In order to keep Williams, the Celtics may need to part with Malcolm Brogdon in order to do so. It’s all going to depend on what type of offer sheet Williams commands.
