Rams trade Cam Akers to the Vikings
The Los Angeles Rams are trading running back Cam Akers to the Minnesota Vikings, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. The deal will see the Rams send Akers and a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick to the Vikings for a conditional 2026 sixth-round pick.
The Rams and Akers have had a tumultuous relationship throughout his time in Los Angeles. Those issues resurfaced quickly in 2023. Akers finished Week 1 with 22 carries for 26 yards. After that performance, the Rams made Akers inactive for Week 2 and it was revealed the team was looking to trade him.
It is evident that Rams head coach Sean McVay is not a fan of Akers. At this point, it was clear Akers needed a fresh start with a new team.
The Minnesota Vikings were the team to step up and invest in Akers. This move makes sense for the Vikings as they look to revive their rushing attack. Minnesota simply has not been effective on the ground through two games and will now have a running back room led by Akers and Alexander Mattison. Let’s see if Akers can add a spark to the backfield.
Akers, 24, has experience playing under Vikings’ head coach Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell was the Rams offensive coordinator in 2020 and 2021 which were the first two years of Akers NFL career. In those years, Akers seemed to be in much better graces with the organization.
Akers, a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is in the final year of his four-year rookie deal. At the end of the year, he will hit free agency.
