A new soccer women’s team is on its way to Los Angeles in 2022. Angel City FC, first announced in July, will begin to play in the National Women’s Soccer League in the spring of 2022.
Angel City FC is the first major pro sports team to have a majority of female ownership. Julie Urhman, Natalie Portman, and Kara Nortman were the original three owners. In recent months, they’ve been joined by Serena Williams, Billie Jean King, Candance Parker, and Lindsay Vonn.
On Tuesday, October 21st, Natalie Portman teased the team’s name on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Along with the club came an even longer list of owners and investors, including NHL All-Star PK Subban, pop star Becky G, actress Sophia Bush, NFL All-Pro Ryan Kalil, late-night talk show host James Corden, and former LA Galaxy star Cobi Jones.
All over the club’s official website and social media, the founders, owners, and investors are nothing but clear in their intentions to bring a larger platform to women in sports. They express their passion for girls and boys to look up to All-Star athletes regardless of gender. With a star-studded boardroom like this one and sharks of business and entertainment all around the table, the club will have access to all the right resources in all the right places.
“For me, watching my son during the FIFA Women’s World Cup and idolizing Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan just as much as Messi- that made all the difference to me.”Portman on her dedication to the club
Personally, having grown up playing every sport an 8-year-old girl could come up with and being raised no differently than my male peers, I’m glad more little girls and boys are going to get to grow up as I did.
Angel City is set to be the 11th expansion of the NWSL after the debut of Racing Louisville in the 2021 season.
