Lionel Messi has decided on his next club following his exit from PSG. The Argentine legend has chosen Inter Miami and the MLS as his next stop according to Fabrizio Romano, “Here we go.”
This is a groundbreaking signing not only for Inter Miami but also for the entire MLS. While no exact offer has been made, the MLS is including a deal with Apple and Adidas to bring Messi stateside.
Inter Miami was not the only club looking to sign the 2022 World Cup winner. Al Hilal of the Saudi Pro League offered Messi a mouth-watering €1.2 billion ($1.28b) two-year contract earlier this week. Nobody could have blamed him for taking that offer, that is enough money to buy the White House, a trip to space, and the most expensive house in America.
Barcelona had also been attempting to bring Messi back to Spain. Messi played the majority of his career with the Catalan giants before moving to PSG in 2021.
The 35-year-old has played the past two seasons with PSG but fell out of favor with the fans in recent months. During the 2022-23 season, Messi finished with 21 goals and 20 assists while helping PSG win yet another Ligue 1.
It is hard to believe that part owner of Inter Miami David Beckham did not have a big role in bringing Messi to the MLS. He had been trying to draw Messi over since the club started in 2020.
With Messi making the move to the MLS it would not be a surprise if we now see more and more big-name players make the move from Europe to the U.S.
However, this may be Messi’s biggest challenge yet. After 16 matches, Inter Miami sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with just 15 points. If anyone would be able to drag them from the bottom to the top it would be Messi.
Even betting odds have seen a massive change with the Messi to Inter Miami news. DraftKings Sportsbook had Inter Miami at +10000 odds to win the MLS Cup and now they have been cut in half to +5000 (as of 12:15PM ET).
