Amidst what may be the final World Cup for Argentina’s Lionel Messi, the 35-year-old could also be heading to MLS side Inter Miami next season, as first reported by The Times Sunday.
The Times reported that Inter Miami, which is partially owned by David Beckham, is confident that they will be able to sign Messi following the 2022 World Cup. A move to the United States wouldn’t come as a shock, since Messi has stated that he is interested in moving to the MLS in the past. Quite often Messi has gone on holiday with his family in Miami and enjoys the city. It is also mentioned that Beckham’s involvement has helped draw Messi to Inter Miami.
Following the initial reports, Marcelo Méndez, Messi’s representative, denied all rumors of Messi heading anywhere at the moment in a statement to CNN.
“It’s false, it’s fake news,” Méndez said to CNN. “There is no negotiation for Lionel to join Inter Miami next season.”
What makes this more interesting is that Messi is currently under contract with Paris Saint-Germain until the end of the 2022-23 season. PSG is reportedly set to offer a new two-year contract to their forward when he returns from Qatar.
These are not the only two teams that have expressed interest in signing Messi. His former club Barcelona is also reportedly keen on a reunion.
Messi is not the only former Barcelona star that may see a move to Inter Miami on the horizon. Current Barcelona and Spanish midfielder, Sergio Busquets, was reported to be heading to the Floridian team following the end of his season in Spain.
Just like Messi, Busquets is currently competing at the 2022 World Cup as the captain of Spain. Busquets, 34, has been playing for Barcelona since joining their youth academy in 2005.
Both Busquets and Messi were part of the great Barcelona team of the 2010s. During their time together the Catalan side won eight La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League titles along with a collection of other hardware.
That Barcelona team was one of the greatest ever assembled and Inter Miami could bring the dynamic duo together.
No matter what the future holds for Messi and Busquets come next season, all their focus will be on winning the 2022 World Cup.
