Leonard Fournette signs with Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills have signed veteran running back Leonard Fournette, pending a physical, according to Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Fournette, 28, is coming off a 2022 campaign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his final season with Tampa Bay, he recorded 189 carries for 668 rushing yards and three touchdowns. In the air, he added 73 receptions for 523 yards and three touchdowns.

Tampa Bay cut Fournette in the offseason to save cap space. The LSU product has finally found a new home after failing to sign during free agency.

The Bills running back room now faces serious questions. Fournette will join a backfield that includes James Cook and Latavius Murray.

Cook has impressed and appears to be the most talented back of the group. The second-year back has 486 yards on 102 carries with 18 catches and 192 yards in the passing game.

The Bills do have an opening in the backfield after Damien Harris was placed on Injured Reserve with a neck injury. Although, Harris only logged 25 touches across six games.

Fournette should have an opportunity to carve out a role for himself in the red zone. The Bills have not prioritized Cook on the goalline and utilized Murray. It would make sense for the Bills to get the 230-pound Fournette in short-yardage situations.

The Bills have struggled more than expected in the 2023 NFL Season. Buffalo currently sits at 5-3 which falls short of the teams’ lofty expectations. The team has suffered injuries on both sides of the ball. It appears that adding Fournette is the team’s first step in preparing for another playoff run.
