Just a day after Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas became shareholders of Leeds United, 49ers Enterprises has added Russell Westbrook to its investment group. The news of Westbrook’s investment was announced early Friday morning.
Westbrook, the point guard of the Los Angeles Clippers, joins the pair of star golfers as well as New Orleans Pelicans forward Larry Nance Jr as shareholders of Leeds.
49ers Enterprises have had a stake in Leeds since 2018. It was not until this year that they became majority owners after Andrea Radrizzani sold his majority share in June.
“So I was lucky enough to talk through that with friends, talking with my business partner as well about different things and having conversations, figuring out if this was the right deal and how we could make it different,” Westbrook said at a Sportico summit.
The question on Leeds fans’ minds is how the addition of high-profile athletes will help the team as a whole.
There is no clear answer to this yet, but with investment from star athletes like Westbrook, there will definitely be more attention toward the recently relegated club.
With 49ers Enterprises looking for a quick return to the Premier League for Leeds, the next month will be very important for everyone involved. That is due to Leeds needing to strengthen the squad in the remainder of the summer transfer window.
So far, the initial investment is looking promising with Tyler Adams and Max Wöber both being reported to have interest in staying with Leeds despite the possibility of moving to play for a top-division team elsewhere in Europe.
Some players have already left Leeds since being relegated to the EFL Championship. Amongst those are Rodrigo (to Al-Rayyan), Brenden Aaronson (to Union Berlin), Rasmus Kristensen and Diego Llorente (both to Roma).
