Lautaro Martinez May Be on the Move to Tottenham

Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez may be on the move to Tottenham, as first reported by The Times in the UK. According to the report, Tottenham have agreed to a fee in principle of £60 million, with possible additions increasing its overall value to £78.6 million after it’s all said and done.

Despite what this move may suggest, the report indicates that Spurs have no intention of Martinez serving as a replacement for superstar striker Harry Kane. Instead, the club hopes that Martinez’s arrival in London could prompt Kane to stay at the club and play alongside the 23-year-old.

The Argentinian is coming off the heels of a Copa America trophy and a Serie A title-winning campaign for Inter last season. Martinez scored 17 goals and assisted on six for the club in league play. However, according to his agent, Alejandro Camano, Martinez is not interested in leaving Inter Milan.

Regardless of whether Martinez’s desire to stay at the Italian club is true, the ownership appears set to move him to London – whether that be Spurs or Arsenal. The club is in financial trouble and cashing in on talent is one way to fix the balance sheets.

Inter Milan owes Manchester United £47 million from the 2019 deal that saw Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku moved from Manchester to Milan, according to The Express. The club’s ownership also accepted a €275 million loan from United States management firm Oaktree Capital in May, in an effort to shore up the club’s financial situation. And with Martinez potentially on the move, it illustrates the club’s desire to remedy their financial troubles through any means necessary, even if that means selling three of their best players in Martinez, Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi.
