The last of the Rizzo-Baez-Bryant Trio has been traded. Kris Bryant will be heading to the San Francisco Giants, ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first on the news:
The Cubs have gone complete sell mode, and have moved the last of their big chips. Yesterday, it was Anthony Rizzo to the Yankees. Today they have moved Closing Pitcher Craig Kimbrel to the White Sox, Shortstop Javy Baez to the Mets, and now, Bryant is off to the Giants.
The Giants, on the other hand, are completely buying into their success so far this season. The Giants currently hold a three-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in their division but after the recent acquisitions of Trea Turner and Max Scherzer, the Giants are getting ready for a heavyweight bout in the next two months. The San Diego Padres have also made strides to improve at the deadline, adding 2B Adam Frazier and RP Daniel Hudson.
This sets up a really intense battle for the last two months of the regular season. Only one of those three teams can win the division, and with the way National League teams are playing currently, I would not be surprised if the 2021 NL Wild Card Game features the second and third-place teams from the NL West.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the return is OF Alexander Camargo and Pitcher Caleb Killian
Like Rizzo and Baez, Bryant is also a free agent following the 2021 MLB Season. While it is no surprise the Cubs are selling, many thought they would attempt to retain at least one of the three.
