New York Mets Acquire Javy Baez
The New York Mets are finalizing a deal to acquire Shortstop Javier Baez from the Chicago Cubs. ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first on the deal:
The Chicago Cubs are having an absolute fire sale just before the deadline closes. With Craig Kimbrel being traded all of 20 minutes ago, and Anthony Rizzo being traded to the Yankees earlier, the Cubs are apparently looking to get rid of everyone. This is a huge trade for the Mets, who now have an infield that features Francisco Lindor and Javy Baez. The Mets had a quiet deadline up until now, and many wondered if they were going to address anything at all. Along with Baez, the Mets will also be receiving RHP Trevor Wiliams.
The news comes rather surprisingly, as many MLB analysts believed 3B/OF Kris Bryant was going to be the Mets target. Nevertheless, Javy provides stellar defense and an electrifying personality that is parallel to Lindor, the two should make for an incredible combination at Citi Field.
The Mets will be giving up CF Pete Crow-Armstrong in the deal, as USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports.
Javy Baez and The Mets: A Match Made in Heaven?
Earlier this week, Javy went on air with Spanish Radio Station Mega 106.9 and discussed his aspirations to play alongside Mets Shortstop Francisco Lindor should he hit free agency. (Clip Via Héctor Gómez Twitter)
Francisco Lindor is currently dealing with an oblique injury, so Javy will be able to play shortstop until he returns. It will be interesting to see how the Mets arrange their infield now with Francisco Lindor, Javy Baez, and Jeff Mcneil. As for the Chicago Cubs, they are in full sell mode as the deadline comes to an end.
