Kevin Durant thinks he should be in the GOAT debate

Current Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant has many accolades. He’s a one-time MVP, two-time finals MVP, two rings, and all NBA six times; he also has three Olympic gold medals, one World Cup gold medal, and a World Cup MVP along with thirteen All-Star appearances.

Durant is a future first-ballot Hall of Famer and arguably the best scorer ever. But should he be involved in the “Greatest of all time” (GOAT) discussion that greats Michael Jordan and LeBron James are involved in? He thinks so.

“Why shouldn’t I be in that?” Durant said earlier this month, according to the Arizona Republic. “That’s the question you should ask. Why not? What haven’t I done?”

Well, let’s look at the resumes of other players in the GOAT conversation. The First is Michael Jordan: He’s a six-time NBA champion, six-time finals MVP, five-time MVP, 10-time scoring leader, 10-time first-team All-NBA and nine-time All-Defensive first-team honoree. Other important accolades include him winning Defensive Player of the Year, two Olympic Gold Medals with 14 All-Star game appearances.

James is another candidate for the greatest ever. He is the all-time leading scorer in NBA history, while also being a four-time MVP, four-time NBA champion, a four-time finals MVP with 13 All-NBA first-team appearances, five-time All-Defensive first-team appearances, 19 All-Star appearances and two Olympic Gold Medals.

The last and final candidate is the late and great Kobe Bryant. Bryant also has amazing achievements: He won one MVP, five NBA Titles, two scoring titles and two Finals MVPs while being on 15 All-NBA first teams, 12 All-Defensive first teams and 18 All-Star teams.

Personally, I don’t think Durant compares to the other three. First, Kevin Durant does not have nearly enough rings. All the others have a minimum of four rings. This isn’t all; the rest all have a minimum of four defensive first-team appearances. At the end of the day, the game is about winning and impacting the court on both ends of the floor, something Kevin Durant hasn’t gotten enough recognition for.
