Kentucky WR Dane Key To Enter Transfer Portal

Coming into the 2024 College Football season, I had Kentucky as a middle-of-the-pack team in my SEC preview, with the biggest question mark being Georgia transfer Brock Vandagriff. Vandagriff had a pair of really nice wide receivers to throw to and a defense that was expected to be competitive this year. However, Kentucky finished toward the bottom of the conference at 4-8 and 1-7 in conference play. After a disappointing season, Dane Key has announced he will be hitting the transfer portal.

In his three seasons playing for the Wildcats, Key finished with 126 receptions for 1,870 yards and 14 touchdowns. For being ranked as the 45th wide receiver in the country coming out of High School, he has surpassed expectations. Key has a sharp route tree with solid footwork and reliable hands. Where he lacks home run-hitting speed, he makes up with shifty cuts with the ball in his hands and good downfield vision. He will fit best in a system that runs three wide receivers at a time and he can slide into the slot role for an offense. For being a bigger receiver at 6’3, he uses his body well in the middle of the field upon impact and can block as well.

Dane Key hitting the transfer portal is good news for teams who need depth at the position. Key would fit best in a slot receiver role, but can use his frame to play outside in the red zone and become a red zone threat. Key did set a school record for most touchdowns by a rookie with six, proving he can be an impact player for a program. I would like to see Key in a middle to upper-tier power four team, where he can develop his skills and showcase why he can be a difference-maker.
