The Safety class in the 2024 NFL Draft isn’t loaded with star power, but I think there is some nice depth to be had. For my money, one of the better Safeties in the class is Miami (FL)’s Kamren Kinchens. After a solid Senior Bowl and a nice showing at the NFL Combine, what does his NFL Draft profile look like? Let’s talk about it.
Kinchens, a former three-star recruit, spent three years with the Hurricanes, getting a ton of playing time. His last two years with the team are where he really turned into a difference maker, having six interceptions in 2022 and another five in 2023. He also finished with 59 tackles each of the last two seasons and five passes defended each season. However, it’s worth noting the passer rating when targeting Kinchens was 115.9. Not ideal.
Kamren Kinchens is your prototypical center fielder back in the secondary. He has better play speed than timed speed. He does a good job snapping the hips to flip and make a break for a deep ball. I think there’s something to be said about a ball-hawking safety as well who produced as many INTs as Kinchens did in college. More than willing to break downhill and lay the lumber. He just covers the back half of the field so smoothly, it never feels jerky or sloppy. Doesn’t get overpowered by TE’s in man coverage.
Remember that passer rating? Yeah, that has to be fixed. He has to sharpen up his zone coverage almost immediately. He’s athletic enough to make up for it sometimes but that won’t cut it in the NFL. He does get downhill in run support but the angles he takes can lead to missed tackles. True ball-hawking safety, but this can lead to missed passes resulting in big plays.
I’ve gone back and forth on my top Safety rankings, and I think I have him as my SAF2 at the moment, subject to change. Kamren Kinchens ends up with a second-round grade from me, probably around the 50’s and a little later. I think the instincts Kinchens has are more than enough to work with, and we can hone in on that aggression and sharpen the zone coverage. He’ll be a good rotational piece and special teamer right away.
