Justin Herbert Is Doing So Much With So Less This Year

I don’t want to hear the words “social media quarterback” in the same sentence as Justin Herbert ever again. Let’s put it to rest. He has easily announced himself as a top-five quarterback in the league now and if you don’t agree, you’re simply wrong. The dude has a case for top-three, too. He’s singlehandedly carrying the Los Angeles Chargers into the playoffs, and it’s been remarkable to watch.

There seems to be some sort of misconception that Herbert’s supporting cast is full of riches. When you take a closer look, that’s just not the case.

Keenan Allen is washed and isn’t that good anymore. There, I said it. People won’t like to hear it but it’s true. The 30-year-old is slow, can’t gain any yards after catch, and has hamstrings made of Swiss cheese.

As much as I love Austin Ekeler from a fantasy perspective, he’s a running back in namesake. He’s never gotten much done between the tackles and that lack of a running game puts even more weight on Herbert’s shoulders.

I’d argue Mike Williams is far and away Herbert’s best weapon with his contested catch ability, but I mean, the guy can’t stay healthy. How many games has he even played in the last three seasons? And does he ever actually get open? Mossing a dude is cool and all, but I’m sure Herbert would like a couple easy throws here and there.

Meanwhile, Joshua Palmer is also a fine piece to have but he’s nothing that’s going to change an offense.

Combine this very average receiver core with the prehistoric offense that Joe Lombardi runs, and it’s a recipe for disaster. I mean, look at this.

Thankfully, the Los Angeles Chargers have a secret ingredient in their quarterback.

Even though his offensive line has been below average at best, ranking Herbert in the top 10 in sacks taken, he gets it done. Even though Rashawn Slater, his standout left tackle, has been out for most of the year, he gets it done. And even though he’s been throwing to backup receivers for most of the year, the man has still got it done. Throwing for over 4,000 yards with a bum squad which is second highest in the league is no joke.

Hats off to Herbie.

It’s time to give Justin Herbert all his flowers because he deserves it. I pray he gets a more competent squad around him in the next few years because I can’t bear seeing a talent like him get wasted. The Los Angeles Chargers may not be that good all-around this year, but you can sure bet No. 10 is going to give a tremendous fight against any team that draws him in the playoffs this year.
