Rashawn Slater Expected to Miss Rest of Season with a Torn Bicep Tendon

Monday began with bad news for the Chargers as it looks like they will have to finish the 2022 season without standout Pro Bowl-level left tackle Rashawn Slater following reports that he has a torn biceps tendon in his left arm.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news first.

Obviously, there is never an ideal time for a player of Slater’s caliber to miss the rest of the year. For a Chargers team that is already being crippled with injuries, the loss of Slater at this time is crippling.

The Chargers are already without Pro Bowl-level receiver and Herbert’s favorite target in Keenan Allen and have seen other injuries to their offensive line with center Corey Linsley having to miss time as well. They have also been without their premier cornerback J.C. Jackson and also recently lost Joey Bosa with an apparent groin injury to further weaken this depleted defense.

Their franchise quarterback, Justin Herbert, is also dealing with damage to his rib cartilage and it’s clear that he is still not yet at 100 percent. And in a league where one of your main jobs is to protect your franchise QB, losing a Pro Bowl-level talent in Slater, who also serves as Herbert’s blindside protection, can have disastrous consequences.

Backup Storm Norton will have to take the place of Slater and while he has some big shoes to fill, I’m sure Chargers fans are hoping he can even do half as good a job as Slater has done since being drafted 13th overall out of Northwestern in 2021.

It’ll be interesting to see how Herbert and the Chargers deal with these injuries. Their saving grace right now is that the AFC West doesn’t seem like it’s going to be the bloodbath that we all thought it would be — the 0-3 Raiders look like a mess and the Broncos, while 2-1, still look largely unimpressive. Meaning the Chargers still have a chance to get healthy later in the season and potentially steal the division from a Chiefs team that has already shown some cracks in their armor.
