Julio Rodriguez, Mariners Agree to Mega Contract Extension
Julio Rodriguez is only a rookie but Seattle didn’t wait another second to get their young star locked up to a long term contract. Big bucks are coming for the JRod show. What a moment in history for all parties involved.
Jesse Sanches of MLB.com was the first to report the news.
Rodriguez, 21, made the Mariners Opening Day roster. JRod got off to a rough start upon his first call-up but has since been on fire. Dating back to April 22, Rodriguez has mashed at a .285/.342/.508 clip. You will take that slash line for any player at that age. Rodriguez is probably a strong candidate to win AL Rookie of the year.
All indications point to this deal being worth more than the one Wander Franco signed with the Rays. We don’t have exact specifics but that’s likely because it appears to be heavily incentive based. Jeff Passan on ESPN sort of reiterated the same thing Sanchez did. Either way, ridiculously good business by Seattle to get this young stud locked up.
This is a record contract being handed out by Seattle. It’s the most money ever given to a player with this little service time. The prior record was Ke’Bryan Hayes who signed a $70 million deal with Pittsburgh for players who have between one and two years of service time.
*This is breaking news! The official contract details are not released yet. I’m sure all of the details in the deal will be listed in his Spotrac page.
