Free agent slugger Juan Soto, the most coveted free agent on the market, has signed a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets, MLB insider Jon Heyman first reported Sunday.
This is the largest contract in MLB History, topping off Shohei Ohtani’s 10-year, $700 million contract he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last offseason.
Soto is coming off one of the best years of his career with the New York Yankees, finishing third in AL MVP voting–which went to now-former teammate Aaron Judge. Soto, who turned 26-years-old on Oct. 25, clobbered a career-high 41 home runs with 109 RBIs last season, sporting a .288/.419/.569 slash line. He led the American League in runs scored, while finishing in the top-5 in walks and in the top-10 in hits and total bases.
It all came down to either the Yankees or the Mets for Soto. The reported final offer from New York was for 16 years, $760 million. But these aren’t your father’s New York Yankees. The left-handed slugger will head down to Queens to pair up with Dominican-born Francisco Lindor, who finished second in the NL MVP voting last year and helped lead New York to the NLCS against Los Angeles.
As for the Yankees, I’m not sure where they go next. They have plenty of holes to address in the infield, outfield and within their pitching staff. There’s no wrong answer, but there may be no right one, either.
