Jose Canseco Exposed By Daughter, Josie, In Call Her Daddy Interview

Jose Canseco is one of the MLB’s all-time scumbags.

Canseco became one of the league’s most prolific hitters through the late 80s and 90s, playing most of his 17-year career with the Oakland Athletics. Canseco’s 17 years were also riddled with problems outside of baseball including weapons charges, domestic violence and violating probation. Almost immediately after his retirement, he was notorious for claiming that he was blackballed by the league and that it wasn’t really his choice to retire. Around the time of these claims, he started floating the idea of a tell-all book focused on the use of anabolic steroids in the MLB. In his 2005 book, entitled Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big, Jose Conseco exposed absolutely everybody (including A-Rod), claiming that 85% of the MLB uses anabolic steroids. While many of the biggest names in baseball at the time were mentioned, the absolute biggest scumbag move was exposing his former teammates, Mark McGuire, Juan Gonzalez, Rafael Palmeiro, Ivan Rodriguez and Jason Giambi. On top of that, he makes many claims about fellow players cheating on their wives, his behaviour with women, and claims that he once ran a 3.9 40 yard dash (I’m calling no shot). Nobody likes a snitch.

Canseco has had many pursuits since the time of his retirement, the most recent of which was one of the softest things I think I have ever seen. In a fight night put on by Barstool Sports, Canseco agreed to fight Barstool intern Billy Football. All in all, Canseco took a dive after about 10 seconds, claiming that he had suffered a torn shoulder months and that he knew about it as well. Bottom line, he knew he couldn’t fight, he took a dive and he hustled Barstool out of about a million dollars.

Doesn’t sound like a great guy, does he? Well, if you weren’t convinced by all of that, maybe you will be by what his Daughter, Josie Canseco, had to say in an interview with Call Her Daddy’s Alex Cooper last week. I want to preface this whole thing by saying that after listening to the interview, it sounds like Josie Canseco has had a pretty tough upbringing. While I’m sure that her last name has allowed some level of advantage, especially in the modelling industry, it sounds as though that same last name didn’t guarantee her a present father or a healthy childhood. Jose Canseco was only present in his daughter’s life for 5-6 years collectively over her lifetime (according to Josie), and she was raised by her mother.

In the interview, Josie says that most people would just assume that because she was Jose Canseco’s daughter that she lived some sort of lavish lifestyle. She goes on to stress that this was, in fact, not the case:

“He (Jose Canseco) never took care of us, never paid child support, never nothing. My mom had to raise me, single mom, with nothing.”

Jose Canseco, despite being one of the highest-paid athletes on the planet at the time, could not even pay child support. How wild is that? Even when he was around, they couldn’t even go out in public without her father’s decisions coming back to bite them:

“Anything they could shoot at me for. saying things like ‘your dad’s a snitch, f*** you and your family, your dad’s worthless. I’d be out in public with my dad and they yell at him. People had the audacity when we’d be like walking out of a movie theatre to yell and say ‘you f***** snitch’ and my dad wouldn’t tell me really what was going on but I knew something was going on. I was just wondering why these people hated my dad. Why was my dad one of the most sought-after, spoken about people? I was just young, I didn’t get it, and I didn’t get why I was catching heat for that as well.”

Even Alex Cooper, someone who isn’t exactly known for her emotional depth, was taken back by that statement. Imagine being a young kid and having to deal with people screaming at your father anytime you went in public with him? I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult that would be. Now, to be fair, there is a level of responsibility that falls on the people that were making the comments. What kind of a grown adult yells ‘you’re a f***** snitch” at anybody in public, especially when their young child is with them? That being said, there wouldn’t have been an issue if Jose Conseco hadn’t snitched on his teammates or other MLB colleagues. On top of that, Josie details at length how her father’s other antics affected her from a young age. When asked about how her dad’s very public, often volatile relationships affected her, she had the following to say:

“I think that having the kind of dad I did, whether it was him with girlfriends, the cheating. I don’t know if he’s ever laid a hand or anything. Like these are things that are out of sight, out of mind. These are not really things that I talk about. I just don’t know. But I think just seeing how he was as a partner, made me have a bitter taste with men.”

Josie Canseco’s interview was a clear departure from the kind of content that is usually featured on Call Her Daddy. To her credit, Alex Cooper did an amazing job balancing the Call Her Daddy vibe with the heavier topics. You could tell that Josie was comfortable with her and, for that reason, the interview was really great. As I said before, it was honestly a little bit tough to listen to. Josie Canseco is clearly a pretty tough person but I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult her childhood must have been. The public eye often makes it difficult enough for children to deal with their parents’ fame even if it is a healthy family situation. In the case of Jose Canseco, with his volatility, his public image and his absence must have been an extremely difficult person to be associated with at all, let alone for that association to be that you’re his daughter.

Look, Jose Canseco likes to play the victim. Since his retirement, he has been outspoken about the MLB blackballing him and has claimed that the media does not treat him fairly. At the end of the day, his treatment has been about him, no one else. He was the one who chose to take steroids, he’s the one who chose to snitch on his teammates, he’s the one who got arrested so many times and he’s the one who was never there for his daughter.

Reason number (insert ridiculously large number here) why Jose Canseco is an all-time scumbag. If you weren’t convinced at the start of this article, are you now?
