Jordan Davis: ‘I don’t want to be known as just a run-stopper’

The Philadelphia Eagles boast arguably the best and deepest defensive line in the entire NFL. Howie Roseman LOVES using top picks in the trenches and it’s safe to say it’s panned out up to this point, and that was no different when the Eagles used the No. 13 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to select Jordan Davis out of Georgia.

He would be joining an already dominant defensive line with the purpose of being a run-stopper. But now in his second year, Davis has expressed a desire to become more than that.

“I don’t want to be known as just a run-stopper,” Davis said on Thursday. “I want to be more than that, an all-around guy. We’ll just continue working. Rome isn’t built in one day. We just put our hat on and keep working.”

Regardless of what steps he ends up taking, Davis’s main role will always be stopping the run.

Trey has a great profile on him and pretty much everything he says about Davis has been true up until this point. He eats up blocks and always seems to be involved in every run play up the middle. The entire unit is better when he is on the field and the Eagles’ numbers as a unit show it.

If he were able to develop a consistent pass rush… oh boy, he could really be a problem. Nobody is saying he needs to be an Aaron Donald or J.J. Watt. It’s clear he can never quite be that. With the raw athleticism he has, he can easily be a player who racks up five sacks per season.

This would make him a deadly weapon on this defensive line with the value he already provides the Eagles as a run-stopper.

A good sign for Jordan Davis is that he already has more sacks than he did last year; he has 1.5 through two games (he had zero last year), but it’s reassuring to see him making improvements.

Obviously, the Eagles drafted Jordan Davis to primarily stop the run, but part of them also felt he could turn himself into quite the pass rusher if he honed in on his technique. In Philadelphia, there are plenty of veterans around him who can help him do just that.

So far, it seems to be working for the young Georgia product. The rest of the league just better hope he doesn’t unlock this full potential because if and when he does, the best defensive line in football is going to get a lot better.
