The Kings and Jonathan Quick last won the Stanley Cup in 2014 but we could be seeing a bit of a Rennaissance in LA. It’s a young Kings team with the right veteran pieces in place. Quick still feels like he’s at the top of his game and is in no rush to retire.
Quick, 36, is in the final year of his contract that is paying him $58 million that was signed back in 2012. The $5.8 million cap hit was never an outrageous number given the fact that Quick’s Conn Smithe winning season is statistically the best goalie run ever. Quick is a two time standing Cup champion and can more than still play. It’s not surprising to hear Quick doesn’t plan on hanging it up after the season.
Quick is very much in a time share right now with Cal Petersen. However, towards the end of the season, Quick outplayed the younger alternative.
Petersen 2021: 2.89 GAA, .895 SV%
Quick 2021: 2.59 GAA, .910 SV%
You would have to imagine that the Kings will roll with Quick to start the season. It’s a Kings team with a lot of momentum right now after adding Kevin Fiala. He could be the missing piece for a team fresh off a playoff appearance where they lost in 7 games to the Edmonton Oilers in the first round. The Kings could be very dangerous.
While Quick’s deal expires at the end of this season, it’s hard to imagine Quick wearing another jersey at this point. Then again, that’s what we thought with Marc-Andre Fleury so I guess you never know.
