Recently hired head coach Jonathan Gannon is looking to take his new franchise quarterback Kyler Murray to the next level by bringing him under center more, according to theScore.
The Cardinals recently hired Gannon after being the Eagles’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Gannon led a pair of top-10 Eagles defenses in 2021 and 2022. Philadelphia ranked second in total defense in 2022 and 10th in 2021. The Cardinals haven’t had a top-10 ranked total defense since the 2017-18 season. Gannon will look to turn that around.
One core reason why Gannon chose to take charge of Arizona instead of staying in Philadelphia was Kyler Murray. Gannon believes he can take the former first overall pick to the next level.
“If Kyler Murray isn’t here, I don’t take this job,” Gannon told Peter King of Pro Football Talk. “I think this offense will look much different. This guy does things that it completely handcuffs you how you play defense at times. I think we can take him to another level and unleash his full skill set.”
“We’re not gonna put him in gun all the time, I’ll tell you that. We’ll have two significant offenses with his skill set: one being under center and one being in the gun,” Gannon said, via theScore.
Last year, the Cardinals’ offense was nothing special. Murray and the Cardinals offense ranked 21st in points last season. Murray also posted career lows in wins, passing touchdowns, passing yards per game, and passer rating in his final year under former head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
