There seems to be some controversy for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Some believed that the rightful winner won the award. While others believe that T.J. Watt should have won. JJ Watt seems to be on the latter side of that argument. What do you expect though? His brother had a phenomenal year. However, Aaron Donald won and people are upset about it. JJ Watt took his thoughts to his Twitter account on the announcement on the award:
“Aaron Donald is an absolutely incredible player,” J.J. Watt wrote on Twitter. “I love watching him play & he’s headed to the Hall of Fame without question. This has nothing to do with AD personally. This is me saying what my brother won’t. TJ played 1 less game and STILL led the NFL in every major category.”
As we can tell from the graphic on the tweet, there’s no doubt that the basic stats obviously favor TJ Watt. He had more tackles, tackles for loss, sacks, pressures, quarterback hits, pass deflections, and interceptions than Aaron Donald. There is no disputing that. However, the difference between the two is that TJ Watt is an outside linebacker, while Aaron Donald is a defensive tackle. Aaron Donald was doubled, if not triple-team every play and still put up great stats. There are metrics that support that claim as well.
Anyone can box score watch and see that TJ Watt had better stats. He has more opportunities to get those stats. Aaron Donald is the rightful winner until someone does better at his position or he has a down year and someone like TJ Watt puts up similar stats. It has to be one of the other. The only people that are really mad about the outcome of the award are his brothers, like JJ Watt and Steelers fans though. This wouldn’t be the first time Steelers fans cry about little things though.
