J.J. McCarthy: Michigan’s golden boy, the quarterback who turned Big Ten mediocrity into a national championship, and now, he’s in Minnesota trying to do the same, only with more snow and less maize. But before we crown him the savior of Minnesota, let’s remember: even the best can be a bust.
After all, this is a guy who was never really asked to do too much during his time at Michigan. Even during their run to win the National Championship, the ground game and defense were the deciding factors.
None of this means JJ McCarthy can’t still be a great leader at the NFL level. He has shown an ability to win games, and in the NFL the sheer ability to do that is invaluable.
With McCarthy missing the 2024 season with a torn ACL, many wonder how the transition to the next level will go. But no one seems more excited than Minnesota Vikings co-owner Mark Wilf, who said this about the Michigan product.
“He has a gravitational pull as a leader. He really does, “The talent is there. Coach [Kevin] O’Connell is glowing in his praises of how he’s handled everything, and from an off-the-field perspective, we couldn’t be happier. So all things are pointing the right direction, and we’re going to be supporting J.J. to have him be the success we want him to be.”
Indeed, some very high praise there, even if it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I doubt Wilf would come out and publicly trash his first-round QB even if things were ugly behind the scenes.
What we do know is that JJ McCarthy is a proven winner at Michigan. Even if you want to say he had a lot of help, he played the most important position on a team that won a national championship. That means something.
JJ McCarthy did have the luxury of sitting behind Sam Darnold for the year, who seemingly revived his career in his one year starting with Minnesota. So hopefully, McCarthy was able to learn a few things he can bring with him going into this season.
