J.J. McCarthy Dynasty Fantasy Draft Profile 2024
After weeks of speculation surrounding which quarterback they would select, the Minnesota Vikings traded up one spot to draft Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, a reigning national champion who helped lead the Wolverines to the fourth 15-0 season in college football history.
McCarthy will likely battle it out with Sam Darnold in camp for the starting gig, but how does this affect his value in dynasty leagues for fantasy football? Let’s examine!
McCarthy may not be Caleb Williams, or even Drake Maye, but McCarthy still offers plenty of dynasty value, even if he doesn’t start right away. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell made it abundantly clear that they’re not going to rush his development, and whether it’s his downfield processing, footwork or ball placement, I’m confident in the coaching staff to put him in proper position to succeed.
But it’s not just Minnesota’s coaching that raises his floor, it’s the talent surrounding McCarthy that offers intriguing long-term upside. Not every rookie quarterback gets dropped into a quarterback-friendly offense and with Justin Jefferson–arguably the best wideout in the NFL–Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson as the team’s best pass catchers. That doesn’t include a decent offensive line and newly-signed veteran running back Aaron Jones, who helps alleviate pressure on the ground and through the air.
The 6-foot-3 rookie just turned 21-years-old and, if taken care of correctly, could have a long and successful career. He’s in a great situation any way you slice the pie; there’s a world where he starts Day 1, but there’s also a world where he doesn’t field a snap. I still like his value in dynasty formats because he will be in a great situation with plenty of opportunities to succeed–whether it’s in 2024 or not.
