The football world is now in a state of mourning after hearing that NFL Legend and Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown has passed away at the age of 87, his wife Monique announced Friday.
As a football player, Jim Brown was one of the best to ever do it. He was a man playing amongst children and was a nightmare for opposing defenses for the nine seasons he played. Arguably even more impressive than the sheer talent and domination he displayed on a weekly basis, was the fact that he never missed a game.
In just his nine years, he amassed 12,312 rushing yards to go with 106 touchdowns, earning three MVPs. But in my opinion, the most impressive stat he holds is the 104.3 yards per game he averaged over the course of his career. He set numerous different records, was the face of the NFL and is regarded by many as the greatest running back of all-time. It’s easy to see why that’s the case.
This is why many people were surprised when he retired at the age of 30 to pursue a career in acting/activism. He still had many playing years left ahead of him and could have further cemented his legacy as one of the best of all time. But he instead opted to focus on a career in the film industry and helping others.
He started in films such as “The Dirty Dozen” and “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka”, which helped establish himself more as a pop culture icon and make him more recognizable in the eyes of the public. But Brown’s off-the-field accomplishments don’t just stop there.
Jim Brown simply had a desire to help other people. He was one of the first pro athletes to speak in support of the civil rights protest, something not a lot of athletes did at the time. He also set up the Amer-I-Can program, aimed at helping at-risk youth find their direction in life.
Jim Brown was a mentor to many and loved sharing his knowledge with the younger generation of players. He paved the way for a future generation of African Americans and his impact on the NFL to help society as a whole will forever be remembered.
Truth be told, the amazing accomplishments of Jim Brown truly can’t fit in just one article. I mean the football accolades alone would be too much to fit in just one piece of writing. But again, Jim Brown was so much more than just a football player. He was an activist, an actor, a mentor and an inspiration to so many more.
But more importantly, he was a husband and a father, so please keep them in your prayers tonight. Jim Brown was a truly amazing football player, but was an even better person.
