Former two-sport star Bo Jackson accomplished a lot in his career. He played college baseball and college football for Auburn, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1985 as a running back. He continued his dual prowess in the pros as both a running back for the Los Angeles Raiders and outfielder for the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels. Jackson is the only athlete in history to be named to both the NFL Pro Bowl and the MLB All-Star Game. A hip injury in 1991 precipitated a premature end to his athletic career.
Despite his superhuman feats, the 60-year-old has seemingly met his match with a nasty bout of the hiccups. Apparently, he’s been dealing with them for almost a full year.
Jackson was supposed to be in attendance for a ceremony honoring baseball Hall of Fame and fellow Auburn man Frank Thomas. On May 10, he revealed the reason for his absence on WJOX-FM’s McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning.
“I’ve had the hiccups since last July and I’m getting a medical procedure done the end of this week, I think, to try to remedy it. But I’m busy at the hospital sitting up with doctors poking me and shining lights down my throat, and probing me every way they can to find out why I’ve got these hiccups, so that’s the only reason that I wasn’t there.”
When asked if anyone has proposed a reason for his hiccups or come up with a cure, Jackson had quite the response.
“Hell, no. I have done everything: scare me, drink water upside down, smell the a** of a porcupine. It doesn’t work.”
Bo Jackson will reportedly undergo an unspecified surgical treatment to cure his hiccups.
