The Patriots really wanted Xavier Worthy but had to settle for Ja’Lynn Polk instead. The Patriots are already suffering the consequences for that error on draft day. Jerod Mayo doesn’t sound super fond of Polk and Polk has no issues firing back at him in the media.
Mayo was asked about Polk’s struggles. He basically called him a mental midget who needs to work harder.
“I think he just needs to get over this mental hump,” said Mayo. “You’ve got to eliminate the dropped passes. You’ve got to be better at blocking, which he did a great job in college at that and at times throughout the season.
“He just has to continue to grow, and he has to work harder. He has to pay more attention to the details, and we fully expect him to grow into a receiver that’s dependable on run and pass downs.”
The former Washington receiver fired back and claims he has the best hands in the league.
“I’m not dealing with [any] mental problems at all. No mental problems,” Polk said. “I believe I have the best hands in the league. So, I feel like my drops, that’s not an issue at all.”
I’m not sure where Patriots fans stand but this entire Mayo operation feels like a clownshow. Polk was the third best receiver on the University of Washington team. Now you’re basically asking him to be the number one on an NFL team. Of course, he’s going to take his lumps. But again, you already knew the Patriots reached for Polk if you read my draft notes.
I think the bigger problem is that Mayo is clearly an unaccountable dope. He’s blaming everything else for this mess. Did anybody see the comments about how he inherited a bad team?
Sorry, not sorry, but that’s nonsense. You don’t hear Dan Quinn complaining about how he inherited a bad team. Instead, his team is playing better than they did when Ron Rivera ran the team. The opposite is true in New England. By the way, all the Patriots did this offseason was bring the same guys back who Mayo claims sucks. Christian Barmore, Jabrill Peppers, Kyle Duggar, Josh Uche, etc all returned from the Belichick regime. They even brought back Jacoby Brissett. At some point, look yourself in the mirror…
