Sports Media
The USC guy here at Vendetta Sports Media continues to power through the Trojans’ players, with Calen Bullock’s profile and Solomon Byrd’s profile already covered, and Trey grabbed Brenden Rice’s profile. Next up on the docket is Jarrett Kingston. Kingston was tasked with protecting Caleb Williams this season and did a decent job. He posted an alright NFL Combine, but did that help his draft stock at all? Let’s talk about it.
Kingston, a former three-star recruit, committed to Washington State, where he would play from 2018-2022 before transferring to USC for the 2023 season. In 37 games played for the Cougars, he started 26 with 16 of those coming at left guard and 10 at left tackle. He would play left guard for the Trojans this last season.
Jarrett Kingston plays with a nasty side to him, but it doesn’t always come out. I’d like to see him tap into that a little more. The hands land pretty violently and are always in a pretty clean place. The footwork isn’t actually too bad, he uses his kick slide pretty well. The knee bend is in a fine spot right now, but could drop his ass a little lower. Kingston is athletic enough to kick out on swing plays and get to the second level.
Kingston does struggle to fill gaps. This could be in part due to him having a shorter wingspan. This also is an issue as defensive linemen often get into his chest and land first. Could use a lot of reps in the off-season in pass pro, he is better in run blocking than pass pro. Nothing necessarily feels overly special about his game, but I think that he has fine enough skills. You don’t necessarily need top-end skills to succeed I suppose, but at least one would be nice, no?
I’m not sure if I would use a draft pick on Jarrett Kingston. While he does get an undrafted grade from me, I would at least put in the phone call to try and bring him into the building for training camp. I wouldn’t make it a priority to get him, but the phone call would at least be put in. The run blocking is tempting, and I would be curious to see if he can grow in pass pro.
