James Conner Looking To Bring Some Intensity to Arizona

Former Pittsburgh Steeler James Conner signed with the Arizona Cardinals this past offseason. After four seasons with the Steelers, Conner enters his fifth year on a new team and new environment. Conner looks to bring a style of hard-nose football and leadership to the Cardinals backfield alongside Chase Edmonds.

Conner sat down with Lisa Matthews on the Cardinals YouTube channel on an episode of On The Fly to discuss what he brings to the table.

“Especially in the backfield, I’m the older guy with the most leadership,” Conner said. “Year 5 for me. So I just think I can bring leadership here. Just hard-nosed football, but also get involved in the passing game as well. Hard-earned yards, but also just big explosive plays, alongside with all the other guys. Just my presence.”

Conner had his best season as a pro in 2018 where he ran for over 900 yards and 12 touchdowns, he also hauled in 55 receptions and 497 receiving yards. Conner can provide a threat in both the passing and rushing attack for Arizona.

With the departure of Kenyan Drake to the Raiders, Edmonds and Conner will carry the rushing load for the Cardinals. I think it is funny how Conner said he can bring some leadership Edmonds even though he has been in the league for one year longer. I will say, Conner played for one of the most historic brands in NFL history during his time with the Steelers and might be able to instill a new brand of football in Arizona. Conner has a lot more mileage than Edmonds and has proven he can handle the burden of being a starting running back. Edmonds has never rushed for more than 100 attempts in a season, so adding Conner seems like insurance just in case Edmonds cannot handle being the lead back or sustains an injury.
