Can we just have an honest conversation about something? Jameis Winston is better than Derek Carr. I’m not sure it’s even a discussion. The only difference is that the guy who’s better doesn’t have a guaranteed contract. If the Saints actually want to win football games, they will bench Carr for good in favor of Winston.
Winston, 29, isn’t perfect. We know this by now. However, I don’t know how you deny that he gives the Saints a better chance to win. In limited action with the Saints this year, the former Florida State product is posting a 4.8% touchdown rate. That’s pretty in line with his career average.
Carr’s mark on the same stat? Just 3%. He’s also averaging 6.7 yards per attempt. I’m not sure what he provides outside of being a check-down machine. There is never a time when Carr makes a throw to win the game.
I know fantasy points aren’t everything but just hear me out. Carr is 22nd among quarterbacks in fantasy points and 27th in points per game. The three quarterbacks behind Carr on total points? Oh, just Mac Jones, Desmond Ridder, and Zach Wilson. Doesn’t that tell so much of the story?
With Carr, the Saints are boring. With Winston, the Saints are fun and way more explosive offensively. If Dennis Allen actually believes in his defense, he should go to Winston in an effort to score more points. New Orleans averages just 21.4 points per game and some of those are from Winston in relief.
The Saints are wasting their time with Carr. In a weak NFC, going to Winston should be deemed as the only alternative. If Winston gets hot, maybe the Saints can make a run. That’s just not going to happen with Carr under center.
