Ja’Marr Chase is overrated in fantasy drafts this year. Yeah, you read that right. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but I don’t care. Chase’s value in fantasy drafts is through the roof and I can’t be a bystander anymore. Sure, he had a stellar season last year but anyone with eyeballs could see how unsustainable his production was resulting in a boom or bust type of player. For Chase to pay off at his current price in the top 10 overall picks, he will literally need to recreate the season he had last year, and I don’t see that happening.
For one, in the second half of the season Tee Higgins was far more involved and became a serious factor when fully healthy. Higgins and Chase are both tremendously good and I think it’ll be really difficult for the latter to finish top-three again with Higgins demanding the target share that he does.
On top of that, we all saw how many times Joe Burrow just basically tossed it up to Chase on a vertical and it ended up in a big play. Realistically, how many times a game do you think Chase will even get that sort of man coverage this year? NFL defenses aren’t dumb. They’ll make adjustments based on the 22-year-old’s performances last year and it could really hurt his upside. With so much defensive emphasis on Chase, Higgins will probably get even greater looks and at their respective values in drafts — the former Clemson product is definitely the Bengals receiver that I want on my team.
With a newly revamped offensive line as well, there’s a good chance the Bengals will be a better running team and the need for those massive gains through the air decrease. Look out for another top-five season from Joe Mixon. My point is though that since the run game was not super successful last year, the reliance on Burrow and his receivers was tremendous. If that pressure is taken off with a now elite offensive line, Chase’s usage could go down as well.
I like Ja’Marr Chase, I promise. His Madden rating was definitely way too low. But when it comes to fantasy football, you’ve got to take your feelings out of the equation. For what Chase’s value is at currently, and considering his means of production as well as his situation, I’m not buying it. I don’t see him having the season he had last year and that’s what his cost implies he will do. Let your friends spend their first-round pick on Chase and make the smart decision on passing.
