Jakub Vrána: Fantasy Hockey Steal With Blues?

As the king of fantasy hockey, I feel as though it is my duty to spot injustices in the industry. I have quite literally never lost at fantasy hockey and humiliated ESPN’s fantasy expert, Sean Allen. With the season rapidly approaching, there is a major injustice going on right now that I can’t seem to figure out. Jakub Vrána is looking like the early candidate to be the steal of fantasy hockey.

Don’t worry… We’ll do our Sean Allen list again. Vrána won’t be the last fantasy league winner we discuss. However, I wanted to start things off with a deep, deep sleeper to kick things off. I think I’ve read six different rankings lists thus far. I’m talking 300-player deep rankings. Vrána’s name is nowhere to be found and it’s a comical mistake. Barring injury or anything else related that keeps him off the ice, Vrána is a lock to finish way higher than that.

Vrána, 27, was placed on waivers by Detroit last year and was eventually given away to St. Louis. In his brief stint with St. Louis, the former Capitals first round pick pocketed 10 goals in 20 games. That’s while maintaining a stagger 17.9% shooting rate. The talent is there. He has game-wrecking speed and a wicked shot.

Explain to me why Vrána isn’t good enough to crack the top 300. That’s a joke. As long as the guy is on the ice, he’s pretty much a guaranteed value this year in fantasy. Vrána is likely in line for a top six role and number one powerplay duties. St. Louis will also probably be better than they were a year ago with young guns in Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou taking a step forward.

I just fail to see why Vrána can’t be a 25-goal scorer while ranking up another 30 or so assists. He’s already done it back in his Washington days a few years ago while playing limited ice time. When you’re drafting in fantasy hockey, use your last pick on Jakub Vrána and thank me later. If it doesn’t work out, don’t be mad, he’s free. The only reason it won’t work out is if he goes back on the player assistance list. When it comes to taking free gambles in fantasy, it doesn’t get much better than this. Vrána has serious upside to steal wins in your fantasy hockey league.
