Jakob Chychrun: Angry About Trade Rumors Involving Senators?
Jakob Chychrun has once again found his name on the trade block. It’s been reported that Chychrun might be available considering how much money the Senators have spent on left-shot defensemen. Can you really afford to pay Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson, AND Chychrun on just the left side? It’s a question worth asking. Especially with where Ottawa is in the standings.
If you ask Chychrun, he’s very upset by the trade rumors. You’re going to want to see this.
“I think it’s ridiculous, if I’m being honest,” Chychrun told The Athletic’s Ian Mendes on Tuesday. “I went through it in Arizona and that was a different situation. But to see it now is a bit ridiculous. And I don’t think it’s based off anything.”
“It’s people shooting blind darts at a board and hoping they hit,” Chychrun added. “People have a right to say what they want, but to act like they have their sources is a joke. And people like to get their clicks on social media. If they have to use my name to do it, go ahead. But I’m not going to let it affect me.”
Chychrun, 25, was traded to Ottawa just a season ago. It’s worth noting that the trade to Ottawa was a homecoming for Chychrun. It sure sounds like he wants to stay.
“I feel at home here,” Chychrun said. “I bought a house and it’s five minutes from my sister and 10 minutes from my grandpa. … I’ve just been cherishing my time here because not everybody gets that opportunity to play in front of family and loved ones.”
So what will the Sens do here? In 54 total games with Ottawa, Chychrun has nine goals and 32 points. He’s also signed through the 2024-25 season carrying an AAV of $4.6 million. Ottawa might want to start by asking what the extension will cost and proceed from there. Chychrun’s desire to stay there shouldn’t be overlooked. Not everybody wants to pay Canadian taxes.
