Jaguars Acquire Mac Jones Via Trade With Patriots

The Mac Jones era is officially over. Then again, I’m pretty sure we all knew this would be the case the second this throw happened.

Jones, 25, will now get a chance to revitalize his career as a backup in Jacksonville. The Patriots and Jaguars have come to terms on a trade that will send the former Alabama product to the state of Florida. Jones heads to the Jags in exchange for a 6th round pick.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:

Trade: Patriots are finalizing a deal to send QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, sources tell ESPN. The trade cannot be processed until the new league year begins Wednesday and he passes a physical. The two sides were discussing a 6th-round pick, per sources.

The return is light but we all know why that’s the case and it goes behind Jones playing poorly last year. There is no chance the Jaguars pick up the 5th year option here. With that in mind, there is really no point in paying a premium. The Patriots were always going to move on because of it and really had no leverage.

For Jones, this move actually makes a lot of sense. It’s a way to get his career back on track. It’s also a big upgrade over CJ Beathard who stinks. Trevor Lawrence got hurt a bunch of times last year and will at least have an option under him. Plus, Jones gets to join his hometown team.

Mac Jones Has Lost The Locker Room In New England

Everything has gone downhill for Jones since his rookie year. It was a good rookie year where Jones posted 3,801 yards with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. That was with Josh McDaniels as the play caller. He just never built on top of it. Can Doug Pederson get his career back on track? We’re about to find out.
