Ivan Provorov Traded To Columbus Blue Jackets

Anyone have this on their bingo card? Ivan Provorov is being traded with the Metro! The Columbus Blue Jackets are acquiring the former Flyers defenseman in a three-way deal with the Los Angeles Kings. David Pagnotta had the full trade details:

The Kings appear as somewhat of a middle man here as they move some salary around. It’s also worth noting that Columbus is sending Philly the Kings’ 2023 first round pick that was part of the Vladislav Gavrikov deal. Apologies if all of this is confusing because I am still trying to figure out this trade.

For starters, you can tell the Flyers are ready to tear this thing down for real. Carter Hart is reportedly on the way out as well so you can assume pieces like Travis Konecny and others will be available. Philly is sticking the the trusted rebuilding model of taking on bad contracts and getting draft picks for it. New GM and fan favorite player Danny Briere is not playing games. You can see here that replacing Provorov for Sean Walker may not be the worst thing in the world for the Flyers considering JFresh’s grade:

Kings Looking Like Jesters

I still am struggling to understand the LA’s thought process here. Are you really that desperate to get rid of Cal Petersen that you’d be willing to take on 30% of Provorov’s deal for two years? I guess so. Maybe they’ll look better if they’re the ones that end up with Carter Hart. Pagnotta tweeted that the trade could coincide with an extension for the aforementioned Gavrikov. Regardless, they’re gonna have to now find ways to A. get a new goaltender, and B. replace Walker on the blueline. Sure, opening up some cap room is great, but how much of it will end up going to Gavrikov?

This trade is incredibly weird. However, we must wait and see when more answers come out. Just be ready for Carter Hart to be on the move too among others things.

PS: There are some other moving pieces here. Philly is acquiring even more assets as part of the deal, as per TSN’s Chris Johnston:

Again, the Kings give up a lot to get rid of both Petersen and Walker. Confusing, but good for Philly as they start to collect some real assets.
