After eight seasons with the Indiana Hoosiers and another loss to rival Purdue, head coach Tom Allen was relieved of his duties, according to multiple reports that surfaced Sunday morning.
Indiana lost 35-31 to Purdue Saturday; IU had a mere chance to achieve bowl eligibility this season. Entering their 10th game this season, the Hoosiers needed to beat their next three opponents, but the Hoosiers fell short against the Illinois Fighting Illini to fall to 3-7 on the season. IU would then lose their next two games under head coach Tom Allen to end the season 3-9.
Back in December 2016, Indiana promoted Allen after one season as their defensive coordinator after firing Kevin Wilson. Allen spent his coaching debut at IU in their second bowl game in two years. Taking command in the Foster Farms Bowl against Utah, Allen would leave his coaching debut in a 24-26 loss.
Allen would then achieve his first win in his second game in 2017, defeating the Virginia Cavaliers 34-17. The Hoosiers would go on to fall one game short of bowl eligibility, cutting their season short once again.
The 53-year-old would finish his tenure at Indiana with a 33-49 overall record. But, the Indiana native fell short in Big Ten play; he went 18-43 in 61 Big Ten contests. This will be the second firing IU has made this football season, as the Hoosiers let go of their offensive coordinator Walt Bell earlier this season.
In lieu of firing Allen, IU will be forced to pay the 53-year-old coach $15.5 million after a settlement was agreed upon; the original buyout was $20.4 million.
The Hoosiers have yet to name future candidates for their head coaching position, but with the coaching carousel in full effect, IU can be an enticing job for potential hirings.
