Ilia Topuria Dismisses Alexander Volkanovski’s Knockout Threat

Ilia Topuria is highly confident heading into the UFC 298 main event against Alexander Volkanovski. It is never easy dethroning a champion, but Topuria believes he has found an important detail that will help him earn the featherweight title.

Topuria gave an analysis of Volkanovski’s skill and power in an interview with Michael Bisping

“There is such an important detail which is [Volkanovski] he is not a powerful guy,” Topuria said. “I mean that he didn’t knock out his opponents. He has a lot of volume. He didn’t have submissions on the ground. It’s easier to face and fight someone like him because you go out there and you know that he has great cardio, but you can make more mistakes. It’s not like the same thing with Josh Emmett. If the guy connects with the right hand, he can put you to sleep. With Alex, it’s a little bit different.”

Volkanovski is not known for being a lethal finisher, but he has used his power to finish fights in the UFC. In his 13 promotional wins, he has five knockout victories. As for Topuria, he has three knockouts and a submission in six UFC fights.

In his last appearance at featherweight, Volkanovski knocked out Yair Rodriguez. It was not a flash knockout that left Rodriguez out cold, but it was enough to get the job done.

This bout already projects to as a fan-friendly scrap. If Topruia truly does not believe Volkanovski presents a finishing threat, it could get even more entertaining. A reckless and aggressive Topuria standing across from Volkanovski would be must-see television. That type of fight may end quickly, but it would be a show.

Will Topuria’s opinion on Volkanovski’s knockout power help him dethrone the champion or will result in an embarrassing knockout? We will only know when the fight is finished. That is what makes MMA great.
