Hurricanes Re-Acquire Tony DeAngelo

After the Flyers cut bait with Tony DeAngelo, it felt like only a matter of time before he found his way back to Carolina. Well, that’s exactly what happened. DeAngelo is signing a free agent contract with the Hurricanes.

DeAngelo, 27, was traded by Carolina to Philadelphia just over a year ago. Carolina cashed in on several draft picks only to watch the Flyers outright waive the veteran defenseman. In fairness, we know why Philadelphia decided to move on. John Tortorella healthy scratched DeAngelo in a number of games. DeAngelo is a great offensive defenseman. Not so much on the defensive side of the game. That was just never going to fly in a Torts system.

The reacquisition isn’t surprising at all. The league previously blocked a trade earlier in the offseason that would have brought DeAngelo back. A weird CBA rule prevented a trade from happening. Instead, DeAngelo finds his way back to the Canes after being waived in Philadelphia instead.

The blue line in Carolina is becoming crowded, especially after the signing of Dmitry Orlov. Does that mean a Brett Pesce trade is on the horizon? Maybe the one-year deal for DeAngelo doesn’t mean any turnover. The only thing that is clear is that you don’t sign DeAngelo unless you want him running your powerplay. Brent Burns could take a beat seat for that job heading into the 2023-24 NHL season.

For Tony DeAngelo, Carolina has proven to be a perfect fit for him. They have demonstrated having a strong culture under Rod Brind’Amour. Something that’s necessary to keep a knucklehead like DeAngelo locked in.
