John Tortorella might have his heart in the right place, but he’s an awful NHL head coach. Torts cares very much about forechecking and not so much about scoring goals. Philadelphia ranks 30th in goals scores with seven ahead of the 31st team (Nashville) but with three more games played. Torts is behind the scoring revolution in the NHL. He just doesn’t get that part.
Recently, Torts benched Kevin Hayes who currently leads the Flyers in scoring. Former Flyer Keith Yandle lost it and says that maybe the head coach should be a healthy scratch.
“Today I woke up this morning to a little bit of some disheartening news that Kevin Hayes won’t be playing tonight for the Philadelphia Flyers and it’s just one of those things I can’t really wrap my head around,” said Yandle.
“A guy that’s leading the team in scoring, having played there I know what he means to that locker room, the leadership that he brings and the enthusiasm that he brings,” said Yandle.
“It’s hard for me to realize that a guy like that won’t be playing in a game because maybe a coach wants to get his point across, it’s hard for me to see what the points is right now,” said a clearly frustrated Yandle. “Just watching a lot of their games this year it almost seems like they are being outcoached in a lot of those games.”
“There are games that they could have won and maybe a decision that the coaches make… it costs them a game,” said Yandle. “You take about accountability and being there for the team, I think it’s one of those things is it time maybe that a coach gets healthy scratched?”
Amen to that cause he’s right. He’s a great quote machine. Torts is fun to watch but it’s very much a crashing rollercoaster situation. He’s not actually a good coach. It’s one thing to bench Tony DeAngelo for not playing any defense. It’s another to bench a guy like Hayes who’s the heart of the team and one of the only guys actually producing.
