Hurricanes Acquire Shayne Gostisbehere
The Carolina Hurricanes continue to shop at the bargain bin. After acquiring Jesse Puljujärvi yesterday, Carolina has made another addition. Shayne Gostisbehere is now on his way to Carolina after the Canes pulled off a trade with the Arizona Coyotes. In a loaded Eastern Conference, Carolina is trying to maintain their momentum.
This deal was first reported by Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic:
The trade return for Arizona is a 2026 third round pick. That is all. A damn low cost for a player of Gostisbehere’s acumen. It’s also the second defenseman that the Coyotes have traded this deadline season that isn’t Jakob Chycrun. Just a few days prior Dysin Mayo was moved to Vegas in exchange for Shea Weber’s contract. Obviously, the return for Chycrun will be much higher but we’re all losing out hope at this point that he’s going to be moved.
Gostisbehere, 29, is in the final year of his $4.5M x 6 year contract that was previously signed by the Flyers. A contract that was later traded to Arizona. In fact, the Flyers gave up a second round pick just to dump him. When you combine all those factors, not a bad haul for Arizona to get a second and third round pick.
With that being said, Gostisbehere should be a useful player for Carolina. Gostisbehere becomes the Tony DeAngelo replacement that they have been missing since they dealt him to Philadelphia this offseason. Gostisbehere has a lot of the same attributes except he’s not quite as good offensively and not as bad defensively.
