Conor McGregor has carved out a legacy as the most popular MMA fighter of all time. The only problem is that controversy has followed the Irishmen throughout his entire career. That begs the question, how many times has McGregor been arrested? At the moment, he currently sits at five arrests with three of those incidents leading to charges. Let’s take a look at those legal issues in more detail.
Conor McGregor’s first arrest is his most infamous. The Irishmen was charged with one count of felony criminal mischief and three counts of misdemeanor assault after attacking a bus at the Barclays Center prior to UFC 223.
This incident was one of the initial factors in the rivalry between McGregor and Khabib Nurmagmoedov. It all started after Nurmagomedov had a verbal altercation with McGregor’s friend Artem Lobov. In retaliation, McGregor threw a dolly at a bus that was transporting Nurmagomedov and other fighters that were set to compete at UFC 223. It certainly did not help McGregor that the event was captured on video.
McGregor’s attack on the bus damaged the vehicle, injured fighters and started a brawl. Shortly after the incident, McGregor turned himself in and was charged, with the damage to the bus estimated at around $8,000, which led to the felony criminal mischief charge.
The remaining misdemeanor changes were because of the subsequent brawl that took place and for causing an injury to UFC fighter Michael Chiesa. Chiesa was on the bus when McGregor threw the dolly at the vehicle. McGregor threw the dolly at the bus window, which shattered the glass and cut Chiesa on the forehead.
McGregor eventually reached a plea deal that saw his felony charge dismissed. Although, he plead guilty to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge. As a result, he was sentenced to five days of community service, anger management courses and was forced to pay for the damage done to the bus.
McGregor also faced a lawsuit from Chiesa which was settled several years later.
In March 2019, McGregor was arrested after he was caught on CCTV smacking a phone out of a fan’s hand, stomping on the phone and walking away with it. The incident occurred at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel.
After the incident, McGregor was arrested and charged with strong armed robbery and criminal mischief.
This incident was dealt with relatively quickly. The victim did not want to cooperate with the investigation because he did not live in the United States. This obviously presents hurdles for cooperating with a court case. The charges were dropped and McGregor settled with the victim out of court.
In 2019, The New York Times reported that McGregor was arrested after sexual assault allegations. The arrest was completed to allow authorities to question McGregor, but he was never charged.
The allegation stated that McGregor sexually assaulted a woman in 2018 at the Beacon Hotel in Dublin, Ireland. McGregor was a known visitor of the hotel and the pair allegedly partied at the hotel the night of the incident.
While McGregor was arrested for questioning, he never faced charges. The criminal investigation eventually concluded without charges being filed. The victim has since filed a civil lawsuit.
In 2020, McGregor was arrested in Corsica, a Mediterranean island, and questioned after allegations of attempted sexual assault and sexual exhibition.
McGregor was in custody for two days where he was questioned but he was released without being charged with a crime.
French officials later dropped the case against McGregor as prosecutors did not have enough evidence for prosecution.
Conor McGregor’s most recent arrest came in March 2022 when he was arrested for dangerous driving.
The incident occurred as McGregor was driving to a training session in Ireland when he was pulled over in his Bentley Continental GT for dangerous driving. He was arrested and his car was impounded. Although, he was released on bail shortly after and he received his car back.
The incident has resulted in a total of seven charges: Two counts of dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a license and not producing the necessary documentation to authorities within ten days. An additional charge of careless driving was added during later court hearings.
This incident has yet to be resolved. McGregor’s court proceedings have been pushed back on several occasions. According to TheJournal.ie, an online Irish newspaper, his next court date is set for December 6.
A conviction for dangerous driving has a maximum punishment of six months imprisonment and a €5,000 ($5,451.50) fine.
If you are familiar, with Conor McGregor’s career you may have thought that he was arrested far more than five times. Well, he has certainly had many other legal issues. Let’s briefly recap McGregor’s other legal issues and explain why no arrest was made.
Most recently, McGregor was accused of raping a woman in Miami, Florida, at Game 4 of the 2023 NBA Finals. The initial reports stated that the victim was seeking a settlement from McGregor, the Miami Heat and the NBA. It is unlikely that McGregor is arrested for this incident unless criminal charges are filed.
In January 2023, a woman alleged that McGregor physically assaulted her. The initial alleged incident occurred in Ibiza, Spain, in July of 2022. The detailed public allegations led to Spanish authorities re-opening their initial investigation. That did not last long, however. The investigation was closed and McGregor was never arrested.
In October 2022, Italian DJ Francesco Facchinetti alleged that McGregor assaulted him and pressed charges. According to The Irish Post, this investigation could take up to two years to complete. McGregor has not been arrested for this incident, but legal proceedings are far from complete.
McGregor’s infamous pub incident where he punched an old man for refusing a shot of Proper No. 12 Irish Whiskey did not lead to an arrest, either. Instead, he plead guilty to an assault charge and was forced to pay a €1000 ($1,116.68) fine.
Finally, and most consequentially, McGregor was accused of sexual assault for a second time in 2019. The allegation stated McGregor sexually assaulted a woman outside of a pub in Dublin, Ireland. The victim filed a civil lawsuit, not a criminal case, which means McGregor will not be charged.
