Texans Social Media Rips Bill Simmons For His C.J. Stroud Take

When you work in sports media long enough, you are going to have incorrect takes. It just comes with the job. If you put enough opinions and claims out there, at least one is going to be wrong at some point.

But some people end up making takes that, even at the time, don’t make a lot of sense. A perfect example of this is Bill Simmons, who is currently eating his words after claiming C.J. Stroud would be a bust.

Only for the exact opposite to happen, and Stroud emerged as one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks while leading the Texans to a 10-7 record and a home playoff game. It’s one of the most drastic one-season turnarounds we have seen in recent memory, with Stroud being a big reason for that.

The Ohio State product finished the season with 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and only five interceptions, likely securing himself the Offensive Rookie of the Year but even generating some MVP buzz prior to his injury. He immediately hit the ground running and continually made the Panthers look stupid for passing on him.

Well, now the Texans’ social media team wants to share that spirit by calling out those who didn’t think Stroud would succeed. Their first victim, in this case, was none other than Bill Simmons, who was initially pretty critical of the prospect coming out of Ohio State.

“I’m locking in Stroud as a bust,” he said. “Just from levitating above this, which is being unencumbered with my thoughts and baggage of things, I’m just like, ‘This guy doesn’t have it. His name’s C.J. He went to Ohio State,’”

Quote Via Awful Announcing

Now, almost a year later, the Texans wanted to make sure Bill Simmons didn’t forget what he had said in the form of a very clever and funny video that really doesn’t do Simmons any favors.

Yeah, it’s safe to say the Texans got the last laugh of this exchange. Not holding back in the video at all, making the claim that Simmons is a clown. This is a claim that seems to be proven true the more Bill Simmons opens his mouth.

The issue with this take wasn’t the take itself. A lot of people were skeptical of Stroud coming into the Draft; character issues emerged, and many wondered if he possessed the ability to break down NFL defenses. But Simmons’ take on Stoud wasn’t even one that was rooted in either of those reasons.

Instead, Simmons claimed that he wouldn’t be a good NFL quarterback because Stroud went to Ohio State and had a first name of C.J.

Like seriously? You’re an NFL analyst, and this is your groundbreaking revelation? That a guy’s first name is totally going to dictate how his NFL career goes? Just come out and say you didn’t watch any film on him, but don’t come out and make elementary school takes so that you can get some extra clicks.

This was an absurd claim at the time, and Simmons deserves all the heat he is taking from this. I’m glad the Texans released this video because not enough people were aware of Simmons’s stupidity with this take. Well, everyone except Trey, who demanded an apology from Bill Simmons for this very take.

The guy clearly knows nothing about college football and has even admitted it on multiple occasions. That’s why I’m so confused anytime he opens his mouth about incoming prospects.

I’d like to think Bill Simmons has learned his lesson, but we all know he hasn’t. He will be back again saying something completely outlandish with no sort of credibility to back it up. But when that does happen again, we here at Vendetta will be ready to cover it.
