Houston Fires Dana Holgorsen After 5 Seasons

Only five seasons into his head coaching tenure with the Houston Cougars, Dana Holgorsen has been fired after finishing the 2023 season with a 4-8 record. The university announced his firing Sunday morning.

In January 2019, Dana Holgorsen left the University of West Virginia in favor of Houston. Holgorsen spent eight seasons with the Mountaineers before accepting the head coaching position at Houston. Before Houston, Holgorsen went 61-41 in overall record and 38-32 in conference play, becoming bowl-eligible seven times and finishing in the top 20 of the AP Poll three times.

In his time with the Cougars, Holgorsen, 52, took Houston to three bowl games and a conference championship game in 2021. Holgorsen would go 2-1 in bowl games and 0-1 in his lone conference championship game appearance.

University of Houston Vice President of Athletics Chris Pezman spoke on the firing of Holgorsen.

“Over the course of his five seasons with the Cougars, Dana made strides in our football program in many ways and laid the groundwork for our transition to the Big 12 Conference,” Pezman said. “Ultimately, the results on the field fell below our standards of excellence. We are grateful to Dana for his efforts and commitment to our student-athletes and we wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

“The University of Houston is committed to a championship-caliber football program and ensuring the success of our student-athletes. Our search for a new leader begins immediately and I am confident with the incredible fan support, tradition, access to prospective student-athletes and the pending opening of the Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center, we will attract a very strong pool of candidates.”

Houston’s assistant coach Corby Meekins will serve as interim head coach during this time without an official head coach.
