I just did the 2025 NFL Draft profile on Isaiah Bond. You can check that out here. Now we’re going to talk about a guy who notched more receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns than Bond. Yes, I’m talking about tight end Gunnar Helm (which only makes the Bond thing more insane that he got dog-walked by a tight end but we already went over how that guy stinks). We have some things to discuss so let’s get right to it.
NFL Draft Stock Report: Week 7, Week 8, Week 11, Week 12, Week 14, Conference Championships, College Football Playoff First Round
Helm, 22, as I mentioned was really the number two target in this Texas offense this past year. You could argue number one as he had more receptions than Matthew Golden too. This past year, Helm notched 60 receptions for 786 yards and seven scores. He has next to zero production the previous two years and saw limited playing time behind Ja’Tavion Sanders.
Helm checks in at 6-foot-5, 241, and was a former three star guy coming out of the state of Colorado. He’s far from an elite blocker but can at least be in the way more than Sanders was who was really just a pass catcher. He’s at least capable of helping out in that area.
If you read the stock report notes, there’s plenty to hone in on in terms of his game. I think the most impressive thing he does is reel in receptions by winning the vertical spacing element. Ball in the air, the guy is just so damn tall that he can win. Does well in terms of high pointing and he’s a matchup problem for opposing personnel.
The only problem is the Combine performance left such a sour taste in my mouth. Ran dirt slow. Never looked like a high end athlete. Saw a fair share of limitations and it’s hard to imagine a scenario where he develops into a monster. I think what you saw last year in terms of winning on check-downs and red zone work is probably what you’re getting if he pans out.
Gunnar Helm cracks my top 10 tight end list but I’m probably only willing to use a late round pick here. There are some intriguing things about Helm but he’s far from my favorite player in the class at this position.

Helm suffered an ankle injury during his first forty yard dash attempt, so there’s a pretty good probability that he’s more athletic/better route runner than he tested. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a significant gap in his Pro Day testing and combine numbers (beyond the normal testing inflation).
