Guardians Considering Trading Emmanuel Clase?
One of the best closers in all of baseball can be had right now for the right price. The Cleveland Guardians will do what they always do. Listen on players that are nearing their contractual expiration date. Emmanuel Clase has entered the chat.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Guardians are willing to part with Clase if another club meets their demands. It should also be mentioned that Clase is under contract for a very reasonable rate.
Clase, 25, has the most disgusting cutter in the game. It’s 101 right at your face, except it’s not and just paints the black as a strike. I don’t know how anybody hits the guy. Some of Clase’s metrics (career-low 21.2% swinging-strike rate last year) went the wrong direction but this guy is as filthy as it gets to close the game out. Clase posted a 3.22 ERA a season about but sat at 1.36 in 22 and 1.29 in 21.
Clase certainly represents a rare ticket item on the trade market. It’s the opportunity to acquire a cost-controlled closer in his prime. It’s going to cost a pretty penny despite the fact that Clase had a bit of a down year. Of course, Cleveland has no reason to move him unless they get the package they want. They have many years of control here.
Side note: This is just me but the Phillies make so much sense here. A Dave Dombrowski special where he drops his nuts and solves a need. Just what he does. Philadelphia needs a closer and this would certainly bring juice to that bullpen that’s otherwise been unreliable.
