The Dallas Mavericks acquired Grant Williams this past offseason and proceeded to promptly ship him out of town during the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline. Williams is now with the Hornets and he didn’t waste any time firing shots at Luka Doncic.
Charlotte won its first game with Williams in the lineup. After the game, the former Tennessee product had some interesting comments. Comments you can only help but tie Doncic to them.
“It’s great to get a win for the city and play for the jersey that’s across your chest, not on your back,” Williams said. “Everybody touched the ball, we trusted one another, a team that never played, practiced together, every single person seemed like they had each other’s back.”
Everybody touched the ball… Certainly, he’s not talking about Doncic, right?
Okay, that was sarcastic, but who else could he be talking about? As of this current moment, Doncic leads the NBA in usage rate by a wide margin. Doncic continues to play like a wanna-be James Harden in Dallas. Nobody touches the ball. Doncic is the ball with the Mavs.
Williams has a point. Jalen Brunson is thriving without Luka. I don’t think we would have saw this version of Brunson in Dallas. Chickster wrote an article begging for Brunson to get more playing time with Dallas, once upon a time. Kristaps Porzingis has also taken massive leaps since leaving the Mavericks.
At some point, this iso center of the universe playing style that Doncic keeps playing needs a reality check. It’s hard to see the Mavericks winning anything with this playing style.
