The Dallas Mavericks acquired Grant Williams this past offseason and proceeded to promptly ship him out of town during the 2024 NBA Trade Deadline. Why did the Mavs give up on Williams so soon? We recently got some insight into why the Mavs moved on and it somehow involves Jayson Tatum.
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon on the Hoop Collective podcast called the Williams acquisition a “massive whiff” and said the decision to switch to Tatum’s shoe line while playing in Dallas may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.
“They were determined to dump him,” MacMahon said. “Not just about getting PJ Washington. They wanted to be out of the Grant Williams business. He rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. He switched from Lukas to Tatums recently, by the way, his shoe selection.”
Just a little side note, but when is Luka going to look in the mirror? Kristaps Porzingis is thriving without him. Ditto for Jalen Brunson. At some point, it’s gotta stop being everyone else that rubs Luka the wrong way. Just saying…
With that said, I understand that Washington may be a slight upgrade, but let’s not pretend that Williams didn’t hold up his end of the bargain. The former Tennessee product averaged 8.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game in 47 contests with Dallas. Not eye-popping numbers but converted an impressive 37.6% from 3-point range.
Williams, 25, will now get a chance to rebuild his value with the Hornets. If Williams plays well with the Hornets, he could find his way back on a contender shortly.
