Golden Knights A Stealth Suitor For Mitch Marner?

We know how the Vegas Golden Knights operate. They’re always interested in the big fish on the trade market. Name whoever you want. Just at the deadline, they added Tomas Hertl and Noah Hanifin alone. Mitch Marner seems to be on the block so why won’t the VGK have something to say about it?

Elliotte Friedman made an appearance on Leafs Morning Take with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill. The top Sportsnet reporter had this to say linking Marner and Vegas.

“One of the things with Marner is that a lot of people suspect that Vegas will be around it,” Friedman said. “Because Vegas is just smart, they are around any good player. So I got people hypothesizing Shea Theodore and Logan Thompson deals to me, for example.”

There is a lot to go over here but I’m going to wrap it up as efficiently as I can.

A: There are going to be a lot of teams in the mix here for Marner. I don’t expect Vegas is deemed as the favorite or anything. The Predators were previously listed as a team that’s going to be heavily involved too. Both Nashville and Vegas are no state tax teams for what that’s worth.

B: This is just going to be a super difficult deal to pull off regardless of what happens. If Marner is determined to test free agency, why would any rival team consider parting with valuable pieces to acquire Marner? His contract and no-move clause is going to be a huge part of this. Remember, Vegas got Hanifin locked up well before the playoffs started once that deal went down.

C: Personally, I just don’t think this fits Vegas. It goes against everything they have done in the past. This team tells you what they value. All of their resources are invested into D and centers. Their overall team is enormous. Just look at this roster. They have size all over the place. The last two forwards they invested in were Ivan Barbashev and Hertl; two hammers. The idea that the VGK are going all in on a player of that stature, I just don’t see it based on what they have done in the past. It’s not the team they’re trying to build.

D: I can’t see how they pull it off from a cap perspective. As we went over in the offseason preview, this team needs to shed money, not add onto it. You can’t convince me this team is better by trading Theodore and Thompson just so that you can also not re-sign Marchessault and Stephenson. It just doesn’t add up. Not with the $10.9 million AAV he carries.
